The Vic Shows

Here are all performances from the Vic Memorial concerts in Athens.
(it seems unfortunately Kristin Hersh and Victoria Williams did not take part)

Moving performances throughout the night, though not unexpectedly, Howe stole the show at the 40 Watt's Vic Chesnutt Celebration. A great set of old and new guitar and piano tunes, a Cash cover, Chesnutt rememberances, and pontifications. Thanks for playing over the talkers, Howe.

slowly getting acquainted with archive.org.Previously just checked it out for Giant Sand shows but right now I'm listening to a very nice version of Hang on Sloopy by Vic Chestnut recorded at the 40 watt club in 2004.Also some of you might find a few interesting interviews/live in studio performances at youtube.com/QTV-Neko Case,Sonic Youth,Lilly Allen among others

twitter...I like the way this was handled on the Eels-website:

last March they announced:

3/25/2009- EELS TWEET:
Follow EELS on Twitter HERE.

four weeks later there was posted:

4/24/2009- NO TWITTER FOR EELS:
EELS have abandoned their Twitter account. "The only tweeting I wanna hear is in my backyard. This shit is not for us," says EELS leader E.

if i remember correctly, Barbican, London 2000. Giant Sand/ Kurt Wagner and Mark Linkous were all on stage that night

that has to have been the show of the century so far, real shame it wasnt recorded

04:12 on Wednesday February 17 2010 - here again

Graham
Wow, that 40 Watt lineup is too good to pass up. Howe so rarely plays in the states. Mark Linkous so rarely plays anywhere! And Will Johnson, Patterson Hood, Kurt Wagner...looks I'm driving east this weekend.

40 watt club 19th & 20th Feb - that's quite a list of great musicians celebrating the life & music of vic chestnutt.
i'm sure they'll do a fine job in his honour...

Sure wish I could get to the 40 watt next weekend. Howe and Lambchop on the same stage on the same night--in the United States?! Any chance that the show will be streamed on the interweb?

15:34 on Friday February 12 2010

Oh, I forgot to ask...
...Howe: will the MARS-movie soundtrack be released properly?

That version of Blanket Of Stars/Loving Cup is so beautiful!

(And there seems to be more like that: followed the link below and read this mouthwatering info about the MARS-movie soundtrack:
"With a sountrack written by Howe Gelb and including performances by Howe Gelb, Giant Sand, Neko Case, Victoria Williams, Jason Lytle, Kristen Hersh, John Convertino, Bill Elm, Mark Smoot, Nic Koller, and more.")

Sensational: Kinky Friedman dancing to Howe's music in an animated science fiction movie :-)
(starring Howe, too!)

Ain't it the truth? "...if he were already as famous as Bob Dylan, would see him canonised for his courage instead of viewed as a cult concern." From the London Time Online review: http://entertainment.timesonline.co.uk/tol/arts_and_entertainment/music/cd_reviews/article7005316.ece

For those it might interest: Howe's "backing band" on "The Listener" - as well as collaborators on various songs and duets after that - Under Byen have a new album out on February 8. The first single - the title track "Alt er tabt" (All Is Lost) can be heard here: http://www.soundvenue.com/play/high5
For more info in English about the band I still run my little website at http://www.larsdideriksen.com/underbyen

I've heard the album, though, and once again they go off in a slightly different and interesting direction. :-)

Thanks for the torrent links etc. below. Better check 'em out.

Have a great weekend!

Lars

Yes thanks Javi, Sandra and little Sarah for your great hospitality.

Two great gigs from Giant Sand and a wonderful weekend in Madrid.

07:01 on Thursday January 28 2010 - Glasgow

'June' is someone called Cecilia from Denmark, I don't think Howe gave her second name at either of the Madrid gigs, if he did I did not catch it. I must say the first time she sang on Sunday I thought , oh dear, but it was a sound problem rather than a voice problem. She was absolutely fantastic and we were treated to great versions of 'Jackson', 'Peace In The Valley' and a few others.

I thought both of the Madrid shows were great, Sunday was a true rendition of 'San Quentin' whereas Monday turned out to be an evening of J Cash songs.

I was chatting to Howe after the Sunday show and he felt that it had been a bit flat, I had to disagree with him on that. The band certainly were rocking more on Monday but on balance I thought Sunday was the better show but that might be due to the fact that I was standing next to three very annoying people on Monday night who insisted on having a very loud (inane) conversation throughout the show. (See my previous posts for my thoughts on people who will not stop talking during gigs).

At least part of the show on Sunday was recorded on camera professionally (or they were the most indiscreet bootleggers ever with a giant camera and tripod) so hopefully that footage will see the light of day sometime soon.

It was great to visit Madrid again and to have a bit of time to see the city, I will be back.

I must thank my good friend, Javi (not forgetting Sandra & Sarah), who is a resident of Madrid for making us very welcome and giving us a free guided tour of the city. A great weekend all round, especially as it lasted until today, if only all weekends lasted until Wednesday....
