Great stuff, Barbican tickets purchased. Any other UK dates while you are over?

Barbican show now on sale... thought I'd mention this now I've got my tickets - loved the last two!

'From the outer reaches of the country landscape comes the muse of Howe Gelb, the most prolific man in alt country (yes, even more than Ryan Adams) and head honcho with Giant Sand.' BBC on Giant Sand's Cover Magazine

2010 is the 25th anniversary of the first Giant Sand album, Valley of Rain, and to mark the occasion, Howe Gelb and his band host a very special evening of brand new collaborations and performances.

After 25 years this could be a time for retrospect, but with a new album scheduled for October, this is instead a celebration, a milestone in the life of the profoundly talented alt-troubador, Howe Gelb. And this one-off performance sees Howe and his legendary band Giant Sand celebrating with very special guest Kristin Hersh, guitarist and founder of seminal art-rock band, Throwing Muses.

In June this year Kristin releases her new album Crooked. No ordinary release, Crooked is being published as a book. Containing photos, lyrics and essays, it also offers access codes which unlock an online treasure trove loaded with music and interactive content. This year also sees the publication of Kristin's memoir, Paradoxical Undressing.

In Their Own Worlds is an exclusive invitation to see Giant Sand performing songs old and new, a solo set from Kristin, and Giant Sand providing a unique score as Kristin reads from Paradoxical Undressing.

'I'll jump at any chance to be on stage with the wild and wacky, kooky and cozy Howe. With Howe, I never know exactly what will happen, but it's always great to be a part of it.' Kristin Hersh

Marianne Dissard has a free album download here
http://www.mariannedissard.com/
"Marianne Dissard’s 2010 “PARIS ONE TAKES” is a full-length live studio album that features 15 songs, culled from both her first “official” album, “L’Entredeux,” produced by Joey Burns of Calexico, and her second, upcoming “official” album, “L’Abandon,” due out in late 2010. Recorded in Paris, France in December 2009, with a band tight as can be from 30 dates in 1 month over 7 European countries, “Paris One Takes” is now available as a free download, a gift to all the fans and friends who helped make these past couple of years of touring and music a dream come true!"

Richard, the video was put out by Howe on the release 'The Listener's Coffee Companion' CD (one of the bonus video files). As far as the Mars soundtrack goes, the music is certainly great on it's own. I have had the pleasure of having it here. Hopefully and in my opinion certainly it should be released!!!!

just found the above link on youtube. i think it is 'taking the calexico audition and failing it' which is great and hilarious at the same time. can anyone confirm who plays on that song, because it sounds like convertino drumming. the video is full of imagery about sand and broken hearts, and i wonder if that is deliberate.

Hi Shaun, sad indeed that Mr. Gillett has gone, as you said, although less trumpeted than Peel, in his own quiet way an influence over the years.
And really really sad news about Alex chilton. Bummer indeed.

Arizona Daily Star: "Howe Gelb's new album goes on a flamenco fling" - http://www.azstarnet.com/entertainment/music/article_d7a313fa-de52-55ee-ac48-3d1e6118b83a.html

would also like to mention the very sad passing of broadcaster and journalist Charlie Gillett. it took him a while to get Howe...trust me, i tried many a time, but it did finally click w/ the Sno' Angel album, so much so that "Paradise.." found it's way on to Charlies’s wonderful series of annual round-up compilations that particular year. i believe it was only an added concert date that prevented Howe from taking the Sno' team into BBC London for a session on Charlie's old Saturday night show, a real shame as it would have been so good for my favourite artist and my favourite broadcaster to have shared the airwaves, and i'm sure they would have got along just great. is arguable that over the years Charlie has been as important and influential, if not more so, as dear Mr Peel…either way his sad loss is very much on a par. i hope that he gets the respect and recognition his dedication to music deserves over the coming weeks.

...just realized how funny the director's name in relation to this movie is....

I just stumbled upon this interview with MARS-director Geoff Marslett (see comments somewhere below on the movie, trailer etc):

http://www.indiewire.com/article/sxsw_10_mars_director_geoff_marslett_touts_his_interplanetary_romance/

from the interview:
"Jim Jarmusch’s “Dead Man” is one of my favorite films. I love the way it meanders. I also love the way the music works its way into the sound scape organically. I wanted my Marsnauts to drift towards the new world without really knowing the way…like William Blake does in Jarmusch’s film. To create this drifting feel I wanted the music to be a reoccurring character, again similar to “Dead Man”. I listened to a lot of Giant Sand/Howe Gelb records while I was writing “Mars.” So when Howe agreed to write the soundtrack I was thrilled. Now that it’s done I couldn’t imagine the film without his music. "
And:
"I am finishing up an animated music video for Giant Sand right now. "
